How long have you worked in Real Estate?
41 years! I grew up in Camas, Washington. After graduating from Camas High School, I joined the US Navy. After completing my tour in the Navy, I decided to begin my career in the Real Estate Business. I became a licensed Real Estate Agent in 1975 at the age of 22 and shortly thereafter I obtained by Brokers license in 1980. In addition to other ongoing training and designations over the years, I became a CRS, Certified Residential Specialist in 1990.

What is your specialty?
I have always enjoyed working with people. My expertise is helping my clients understand the every changing process of the Real Estate Business. Over the years the majority of my business has been helping people with the purchase or sale of single family homes. In addition I do have several long time clients who I have help with investment properties here in the SW Washington area. The majority of my business is based on referrals from people that I have helped in the past. Geographically , the market area that I cover is Clark County but I have been known to extend that if requested by one of my clients.

What is one tip you have for someone looking to buy or sell a home?
Most people (I hope) feel that owning a home is one of your largest investments that you will ever make. You will want to work with someone you can trust who will help protect your interests and guide you through the process. A Realtor can help you in many areas by their connections and knowledge. With the ever changing landscape of rules, regulations and disclosures, relying on someone you can trust is a huge benefit. In addition your agent can suggest choices of lenders home inspectors repair and service people whose help you will need along the way. So when choosing someone, make sure they have the experience in every area of the transaction.

What is the most unusual thing you’ve encountered while working in real estate?
I’ve lived in the Vancouver-Clark County area my entire life; I have seen the town and population grow! I remember one of the very first homes I listed for sale was a home in the Pinebrook subdivision. When I came into the office one morning I was informed that earlier that morning a small plane from the adjacent airfield had crash landed into the house. As luck would have it the home was vacant and no one was seriously hurt! I also had an instance in the early 80’s when I spent some time showing homes to a professional con-man who ended up being an escapee from the Washington State Mental Hospital. There’s a bit more to this story but not enough room to share it.

What is the most challenging/gratifying aspect of what you do?
The most gratifying part of my career is the happiness that comes from seeing buyers and sellers successfully make it to the finish line. Especially the first time home buyers who are just starting out and beginning a new family. At the other end of the age bracket are sellers who are retiring and downsizing, they are off to enjoy the joys of retirement and travel. The majority of wealth in this country has come through the purchase of real estate so if you are on the fence about investing in Real Estate, don’t put it off. Get yourself qualified as soon As you can. The lender you choose can help you walk through the process of getting qualified. Everyone’s buying a home; you’re either buying one for yourself or for someone else.

What do you see in the future for real estate sales/prices?
Like they say, you better buy some Real Estate as they are not making any more of it. The majority of wealth that has been created in this country has come through the purchase of Real Estate. Everyone has to live somewhere so in the end you are either buying a home for yourself or for someone else. It’s best to get a place while you can. If you are ready to invest in RE, don’t keep putting it off, go ahead and get yourself pre-qualified today!

What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
Having balance in your life is extremely important. I have been blessed with a wonderful and supportive wife of 37 years. My two daughters are married and they both of them along with their spouses have successful careers! The most recent addition to our family is our first grandchild named Henry who was born earlier this year. Most of my time besides work is spent playing golf, volunteering as a member of the Vancouver Lions Club and taking an annual fishing trip with the guys into a wilderness cabin in SE Alaska. The fishing is so good that we call it a “catching trip.”

What do you like about living in this area?
It’s nearly impossible to find another place to live in this country of ours that has more to offer then what we have here. Hiking in the Columbia River Gorge, the beach, nw wine country tours, great music venues are just a few of the things that I love about this area. One of the biggest challenges we have is how to handle the influx of people who are just now discovering what we already know. This is a great place to live and raise a family!

Anything else you would like our readers to know about you and your company?
I began my career with the Stan Wiley Company, which later became Prudential NW Properties. Most recently it is now Berkshire Hathaway Home Service NW. There are many reasons to be excited about being connected to a Company like Berkshire Hathaway. Unsurpassed technology, agent assisted programs and the most respected company brand in the business. That’s what is important to me – my company has always had great leadership, community minded and a tremendous amount of integrity, that’s who I want to align myself with!
