Historic Hudson’s Bay

Posted August 30, 2021 in Special Features

Welcome to the diverse Hudson’s Bay neighborhood. With a rich history and a well-balanced mix of land uses, Hudson’s Bay is one of  Vancouver’s most exciting neighborhoods. This lovely community has a wonderful mix of single-family homes, historic sites, condominiums, apartments, commercial, and light industrial which makes it a fantastic area to live, work and explore.

At the heart of this neighborhood is Fort Vancouver. The Fort was built in 1824 and served as this region’s headquarters for the London- based Hudson’s Bay Company. Fort Vancouver was a center for business, politics, and trade in this region. It was also the first terminus for the Oregon Trail. In 1849, the Vancouver Barracks were established; this was the first military post in the Pacific Northwest and was headquarters for the U.S. Army.

If you happen to be in the area, stop by Thatcher’s Coffee for a latte and some of the most delicious fresh baked goods in Vancouver; the Rosemary Walnut Scone is my absolute favorite. Looking for a night out? Try Allen’s Crosley Lanes for a fun filled evening of bowling.  Another one of my favorite stops is Fort Vancouver; in the summer, the garden is breathtaking, and a tour of the Fort and Pearson Air Museum is a delightful way to spend a day.
