If you have attended or plan to attend the NW Natural Parade of Homes, you may notice like I did that there are a lot of people attending for ideas. These ideas are important for those who want to build a home or for those who are considering remodeling. How those ideas are communicated when put into action is really important. It’s interesting to me that there’s rarely a conversation about the steps people took to get to the point of building or remodeling. Often, these are financial steps.

For anyone seeking a mortgage, the process is rarely as simple as signing a document. Similarly, the choices made for what will be in a home’s structure as well as the schedule for the funding of the home mortgage can go easier if there is a discussion and the time is taken to physically work through the many options for financial considerations.

It’s common to hear of someone or maybe more common to find a blog written by someone building a home that thought he or she would get one thing but it turned out to be something different than the picture formed in the owner’s mind. Often times those situations can’t be changed once plans are approved, but it’s always easier to address if something, whether it’s financial or a building plan; if it is in black and white. So, I like to put a map together of the financial package and the release of funds so that there is a visual element.

If you visit the parade of homes, you might especially take a look at the virtual home to see the home as it is in the construction process and also be shown how it will look after the home is completed. There is also a home which is in the process of being remodeled. Remodeling a home is also a financial consideration that your mortgage advisor can assist in regard to the funding you could access or how to assess whether it’s smarter to build something new.

Take photos when you tour; ask questions about size and space requirements. And ask the representatives about the financial hurdles that were reached in the process of getting the home ready for the tour. It’s an adventure even for the builders.
